Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar, BBP,ndc,acsc

Born in 1961, Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar is the second son of Mr Abu Ayub and Mrs Akhtarunnesa – a respectable Muslim family of Gazipur district. He joined Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) in 19 September 1978 and was commissioned in the General Duties (Pilot) branch on 01 February 1981. In his long illustrious career Air Chief Marshal Esrar served in almost all the fighter squadrons of BAF in different appointments and flown a variety of fixed wing aircraft which includes PT-6, AA-5A, FUJI-200, FOUGA CM-170, PC-9, CT-4, FT-5, F-6/FT-6, A-5IIIA, F-7/FT-7 and Mig-29. As a much-admired fighter pilot, he was one of the pioneers during the induction of Mig-29 aircraft in BAF. The Air Chief Marshal also performed his stint as a Qualified Flying Instructor and trained a good number of BAF pilots logging around 1800 flying hours to his credit.

Air Chief Marshal Esrar is widely acclaimed in BAF and beyond for his dynamism, scholastic acumen, professionalism and compassion. His illustrious carrier expands beyond BAF assignments including a tenure as Defence Attaché in Moscow and in the Special Security Force. Within BAF, he holds the distinct and rare honour of commanding four BAF Bases in Dhaka, Chittagong and Tangail. His service as the Deputy Commandant, BAF Academy and Officer Commanding, Training Wing is marked with significant contribution in transforming the training curriculum of BAF personnel. At the squadron level, his pioneering command assignments include leading two fighter squadrons of BAF. The Air Chief Marshal also commanded the Flying Wing, BAF Base Bashar, Dhaka. At the Air HQ level, the Air Chief Marshal served as the Director of Air Operations. Prior to assumption of the command of Bangladesh Air Force on 12 June 2015, he was serving as the Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operation and Training) since 2009.

Air Chief Marshal Esrar attended several coveted professional courses at home and abroad. He completed the Flying Instructor Course from UK and Flying Supervisors’ Course from Australia. Besides, he was also trained in A5IIIA aircraft in China and Mig-29 aircraft in Russia. The Air Chief Marshal is a graduate of the 1993-94 class of Air Command and Staff College, USA where he was decorated as a Distinguished Graduate by the Air University, Alabama for his academic excellence. He is also an alumnus of the National Defence College, Mirpur, Dhaka (2002) and Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies, Hawaii, USA (2006). In 2013 he was adorned with the Biman Bahini Podok (BBP) for his outstanding service to BAF.

The Air Chief Marshal is a widely travelled person and takes keen interest in painting, music and reading professional journals. In 1986, he married Mrs Tasneem Esrar – the only daughter of late Group Captain M.A. Rashid and Mrs Razia Rashid. The couple is blessed with three daughters. Away from work, the Air Chief Marshal enjoys practicing his skills in painting and loves to pass leisure with his kids.
