ONUMOZ was established in 1991 to help implement the General Peace Agreement, signed by the president of the Republic of Mozambique and the president of the Resistance Nacional Mocambicana. BAF deployed 18 x officers and 21 x airmen in the mission in different important appointments. BAF Officers were detailed as observer, staff officer and contingent members and airmen were detailed as contingent member in this mission.

The main responsibilities were to monitor and verify the ceasefire, the separation and concentration of forces, their demobilisation and the collection, storage and destruction of weapons, monitor and verify the complete withdrawal of foreign forces and disbanding of private and irregular armed groups. In addition to the observers’ duties, BAF personnel were detailed as Chief Air Supports officers, Air Liaison officers, Air Traffic controllers and performed duties as MOVCON staff, Fire fighters, Aircraft marshaling and Aircraft refueling.

The BAF personnel performed appreciably in the difficult terrain in Air Support planning, Delivery and Air Traffic control which ultimately brought smooth success in supply operation, demolition of explosive, demobilization soldiers and lastly the electoral process. The mission was completed in December 1994.
