A rebel group named RUF (Revolutionary United Front) organised in the eastern border of Sierra Leone subsequently captured almost two third of the country. For a brief period, the government was expelled by the rebels and later on re-established with the interference by the West African nations. The peace deal was signed with the commitment of disarmament of all ex-combatants. Accordingly, the UN initially deployed unarmed Military Observer followed by armed Military contingents. The UN deployed 260 military observers in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) in March 2000.

A total of 29 countries including Bangladesh contributed the observers. The military observers detailed from Bangladesh, are mostly deployed in the remote team sites. Bangladesh Air Force detailed 10 x officers and 04 x airmen in this mission so far.
