Historical Background

     School of Physical Fitness (SOPF) was established in BAF with an idea of imparting fitness and survival training to BAF personnel. It started its function in the month of January 1974. Functionally it is controlled by Air Headquarter, (Directorate of Air Training) and administratively it is controlled by Air Headquarter (Unit). At the beginning, it started imparting sports training to few BAF teams and Physical Instructor's Basic training for PTI. In the time of course, SOPF imparted training to the student officers for Survival & Physical Fitness training and to the sportsmen of BAF Volleyball, Football, Athletics, Basketball, Hockey, Swimming & Water Polo team to participate in the Inter Service & National Championship. The National game ‘Kabadi’ has also been included in BAF sports from 2004



     It is located at Kurmitola BAF Sports Complex.

Types of training imparted by institution and to whom

Sports Training (Round the Year)

     At present BAF is holding six disciplines i.e. BAF Athletics team, BAF Basketball team, BAF Football team, BAF Volleyball team, BAF Hockey team and BAF Swimming & Water Polo team. In near future two more discipline like Kabadi & Handball team may be formed in BAF.

Athletics Ground

     All the teams carry out their yearly training program based on general training method, Sports Medicine & Sports psychology. Yearly training plan is divided into three parts i.e. preparatory training Part-1, Part-2 & Part-3. At the beginning of the year, all the team members prepare themselves to remain physically fit on the ground. Thereafter, they go for specific sports training and emphasis is given to the specific training for which they participate during the competition. On completion of the competition, players of the respective team are given transitional period. In this way, all the teams carry out their practice throughout the year under the supervision School of Physical Fitness, BAF.


Physical Fitness & General Survival Training (Twice in a year)

     Physical Fitness and General Survival Course are usually conducted twice in a year under the arrangement of this unit. 20 officers undergo in the Physical Fitness Course (PFC) comprising 10 officers from GD (P) / GD (N) Branch and 10 officers from Ground Branches.

     Almost all the Physical Fitness Courses are conducted at BAF C&M Unit Lalmonirhat. The General Survival courses are conducted at BAF Care & Maintenance Unit Shamshernagar. The duration of the course for Physical Fitness and General Survival is 20 days (10 days + 10 days).

Training Curriculum

     Sports training imparted at the basis of Sports training method, General training method. Physical Fitness & General Survival training imparted on the basis of the curriculum given by Air HQ (Training Directorate). The Physical Fitness Course (PFC) covers Jogging, Running, Stretching exercise, Gymnastic exercise, Swimming, Route March etc. The General Survival course Aid to Survival, Food Discipline, Intelligence, Night Route March and Long Route March without food etc.

Selection Criteria

     Officers are detailed by Air HQ for Physical Fitness & Gen Survival Course. Players are selected for different games from Annual Inter Base Sports Competition.



     This is a training institute based on Physical Fitness and Sports Training. Presently this unit is capable to conduct Physical Fitness Course for officers & airmen of BAF. It can also conduct coaches and referee training on different games.
